Recent “Encuentro”

A L E R T !  ¡A T E N C I O N!

The Cuba Partners Network recently held its “Encuentro” (or “meeting” in English) from October 5 to 8 in Cuba, and orientation meeting prior in Miami on October 4.

Over thirty participants from the U.S. traveled to Havana on October 5 and then onward to the Evangelical Theological Seminary on Matanzas the next day.

For this meeting, priority was given to persons from partnerships who had never been to a prior partnership meeting in Cuba. It was a wonderful opportunity for long-time and recent PC(USA) partners to join together in prayer, worship and discussions with IPRC pastors, members and lay leadership.

Historic meeting between Cuban and US Presbyterians begins dialog
Connections reemerge after 54-year embargo

A delegation from the presbyteries of Peace River, Tampa Bay and Tropical Florida made a historic trip to Cuba in February 2016 to meet with leaders of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba (IPRC), their first official meeting in 54 years. Prior to 1967, the Cuban Church was a Presbytery within the Synod of New Jersey in the United Presbyterian Church and was nurtured by missionaries and substantial mission giving. The Rev. Daniel Izquierdo, the PRCC Synod Executive, says it was an environment of “dependent plenty.”

New Partnership

Taguasco Presbyterian Church (Cuba)
The First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York (USA)

On June 22, the First Presbyterian Church in the City of New York (FPCNYC) signed a covenant agreement with the Taguasco Presbyterian Church in Cuba.

FPCNYC first visited the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba in 2011, when Senior Pastor Jon Walton, under the direction of Georgia Pease and the Rev. Richard Pease, led a preliminary trip. After an additional visit to the El Centro presbytery in 2012 and the formation of a Global Mission Task Force in 2013, the church began a year-long intensive examination of a call to world mission.

In 2014, a partnership team traveled to the El Centro presbytery again, this time to seek a potential partner congregation. After meeting with many members of many congregations and Session representatives from many wonderful churches in the presbytery, the team suggested Taguasco as a potential partner.

The Session returned to the possibility of partnership in 2015, leading to a draft of a covenant agreement between both churches at the start of 2016. A final version of the agreement was approved by Taguasco and FPCNYC in the Spring of 2016 and signed by representatives of both churches in June and October.

With the support of staff and program coordinator Nicole Stansifer, the Cuba Program at First Presbyterian NYC will work with the IPRC church in Taguasco in a variety of shared ministry areas in common, from services for children and families, to LGBT welcome and inclusiveness, to providing services for the aged and support for seniors.

Congratulations and felicitaciones to all!
